The Twitches: What Happens When Your Body Finally Lets Go During Massage

Have you ever been on the table, getting some kind of bodywork done, and found yourself in this in-between place?

You’re fully aware of everything happening around you. The touch. The feeling. The movement. All of it. You know exactly what’s going on. But you’re also somewhere else at the same time.

How would I describe it?

It’s like I’m present. Fully present and aware in my mind. But my body has given itself permission to just let go and relax.

And for me, that’s when the twitches start.

Little micro twitches, all through my body. They show up when I sink into that state.

Here’s the part I find so interesting. You know when you’re falling asleep at night and your body jerks and you basically twitch yourself awake? I do that. And it scares me every single time.

But when I’m getting a massage, or reflexology, or any kind of service, and those little twitches happen, I don’t scare myself awake. I feel held. Supported. I get to stay right there in that space I’ve dropped into.

Now, I’ll be honest. When I see someone for the first time, I definitely have resistance. I don’t just hand myself over. But the more often I see the same person, the deeper I go, and the more I let my body relax and receive what’s happening in that moment.

And I receive a lot of bodywork. Massage, acupuncture, raindrop therapy, reflexology, you name it. Sometimes weekly, sometimes every other week.

Even so, I’ve always been someone who puts my guard up. I create resistance. I push back. I almost push against the very thing that’s trying to help me.

But something is shifting.

Because I keep showing up for this care, again and again, my body is responding differently. It’s not resisting as much. I’m actually allowing myself to receive the nurturing care that’s being offered. My body is leaning into it. Flowing with it, instead of bracing against it.

And then I get up off the table and I’m just… melty. Blissfully, ridiculously good.

That feeling is something else. And I’m so grateful for the practitioners who put in the time to hone their craft, and who show up to offer this kind of care to people like me.

So if your body twitches on the table, you’re not weird. It might just mean you’ve finally let go.
