What Actually Happens During a Reflexology Appointment?

Every reflexologist does things a bit differently, so I thought I’d share what you can expect when you book your first session and walk through the door.

The Space and Setup

Reflexologists work in all kinds of spaces. Some have clinical offices, others work from their homes, and some are in spa settings. Some take a clinical approach, others are more holistic, and many blend both approaches together.

The cost of your appointment will depend on where you are, your reflexologist’s experience and training, and your location.

Here’s the good news - you stay fully dressed for your session. Whether we’re working on your hands, body, face, feet, or ears, the only thing you might need to remove is your socks. So wear comfortable clothing and you’re all set.

How Sessions Usually Start

Some reflexologists like to have a gentle foot soak ready when you arrive. Others will simply wipe your feet with a damp cloth or wet wipe - both are totally normal.

You might lie face-up on a massage table while your reflexologist works, or they might have a zero gravity chair or recliner they prefer to use.

Personally, I spend about 5-10 minutes chatting with my clients while they soak their feet. This is when I ask general questions about any concerns you might have with your physical or emotional health. I ask what areas you’d like to focus on and explain what you can expect with pressure and any tender spots (especially if it’s your first time).

The Conversation Part

We can’t diagnose health conditions, but having a conversation about your health concerns and what you want to focus on is really important. It helps me plan how I’ll conduct your session.

This is your time to share what’s going on - whether it’s stress, sleep issues, hormonal stuff, or just needing to relax. The more I know, the better I can tailor your session.

What Happens During the Session

Most reflexologists will work through all the body systems, which helps your body find its ideal balance. Based on what you’ve told me, I’ll go back and work on specific areas or follow a particular treatment plan before ending with relaxation techniques.

Every reflexologist has their own routine and approach. You can’t expect the same pressure or experience from one to another - just like you wouldn’t with different massage therapists.

Still Have Questions?

If you’re still unsure about what to expect, call a local reflexologist in your area and ask them:

  • What can I expect at an appointment with you?
  • What are your credentials?
  • Are you registered?
  • Can my appointment be covered by insurance?
